Jeannie Hutchison [My Name’s Duncan Campbell] SA1974.12.6
This song appeared in broadsheets around 1850 from the presses of numerous different printers including that of the Edinburgh printer Sanderson. Jeannie sings her fragment to a tune distinct from that of others (Roud no. 1627).
My name’s Duncan Campbell from the north of Argyll
I’ve travelled this country for many a long mile,
I’ve travelled through England and Ireland and ‘a
And the name that I go by is Erin go bragh.
Liddle i-dle i-dee, liddle, liddle, liddle i-doo,
Liddle i-doo i-dee.
One night in Auld Reekie ’s I walked down the street
A saucy policeman I chanced for to meet;
He glowered in my face and he gave me some jaw
Saying, “When came you over from Erin go bragh?”
Liddle i-dle i-dee, liddle, liddle, liddle i-doo,
Liddle i-doo i-dee.
I’m not a Paddy though Ireland I’ve seen;
Nor am I a Paddy though in Ireland I’ve been.
But though I were a Paddy, why what’s that to you?
There’s many a brave hero comes from Erin go bragh.
Liddle i-dle i-dee, liddle, liddle, liddle i-doo,
Liddle i-doo i-dee.
