Mary Jane was the kindly housewife who was providing bed and breakfast accommodation to visitors to Whalsay when I first met her in 1971. She lived at Hillcrest, Symbister and was married to Alec a retired sailor and fisherman who also played Shetland reels for us on his fiddle. They are both pictured here.
While Mary was no singer, she had an excellent memory and was interested in song texts, poems and rhymes in dialect, and riddles.
