Arthur was born in 1949 and like many young Whalsay men began work at the age of 15 as a fisherman. 51 years later he is still a fisherman. His parents enjoyed singing and their home became a popular venue for informal music making. A skilful guitarist as well as singer it was inevitable that he would be among the group of younger people who met at the home of Iris and David Anderson in January 1980 to record their choice of songs for the archives of the School of Scottish Studies. Your little band of gold was Arthur’s one solo contribution to the evening but he joined with his friend Davy Arthur in accompanying a number of other items.
