This date is doubtful, for there is a record of a vessel of 500 tons called <em>The Middlesex Flora<\/em>\u00a0 which was wrecked in\u00a0Dundrum Bay in 1825 on a voyage to Belfast from Barcelona (E. Bourke: \u00a0<em>Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast\u00a01105\u20131993, <\/em>1994<em>).\u00a0 <\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The bar at the entrance to Dundrum harbour was often\u00a0a deathtrap for ships in a strong south-easterly gale as it could have been\u00a0also for the<\/span><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"> S.S. Great Britain <\/span><\/em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">when she\u00a0beached \u00a0there in 1848.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Roud index no. 3810).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2819\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/01\/Dundrum.jpg\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/01\/Dundrum.jpg\" data-thumb=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/01\/Dundrum-300x210.jpg\" class=\"ml-lightbox-enabled\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2819\" class=\" wp-image-2819\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/01\/Dundrum-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"S.S. Great Britain on Dundrum beach.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The earliest broadsheet we know of was published\u00a0in London by the printer H. Such. \u00a0Versions differ with regard to the various Irish place names and their spelling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The tune is probably of Irish origin and\u00a0is almost identical to Andrew Moar&#8217;s tune for\u00a0the comic song <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2015\/02\/02\/paddys-leather-breeches\/\">Paddy&#8217;s Leather\u00a0Breeches<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>As we sailed from the Downs out of fair London Towns<\/em><br \/>\n<em>My boys we had pleasant fine weather;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For two days or three we had a fine sea<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And our good ship she worked with great pleasure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But there came a thick fog and our vessel did log<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And as scarce could discern our mizzen;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But to our surprise a storm did arise\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And the billows did foam through the ocean.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>As we came down by Wales under close-reefed topsails<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And the point of the land we kept under;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Hail, storm, and sleet, with lightning did meet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And tremendious loud claps of thunder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>All things we made fast to stand the sad blast<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And our pilot stood close by the helm;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Captain pilot and mate at the stations did wait<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And still the proud waves they were swelling.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>And for may guess<\/em><br \/>\n<em>What was our most sad situation;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Our death did appear when as we drew near<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To the coast of the Irish nation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>To the bar of Dundrum our good ship did come<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And no-one at \u00a0their post was neglecting;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Captain pilot and mate at their station did wait,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But they could not prevent her from sinking.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But soon the proud waves did beat her to staves;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Her name was the Middlesex Flora;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Away they did sweep our men to the deep<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Which greatly increases our sorrow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But think what good cries we sent to the skies<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Just when our good ship split asunder;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Our mainmast so tall, overboard it did fall<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And some of our good men fell under.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Just I and no more escaped to the shore<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Where\u00a0billows were rolling like thunder;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I am one left alive out of twenty-five<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And that was a very great wonder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But thanks be to he who ruleth the sea<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And can save in the middle \u00a0 \u00a0 ( Huoshang \u2013 a yellow tea from China)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And some fine silks from sweet Barcelona.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Our rich merchants&#8217; store from the exterior<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Has come from&#8230; tempest and danger,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Along the shoreside on billows did ride<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And promiscuously gathered by strangers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Our Captain James Bell likewise John Climell<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And our mate he was one Thomas Taylor<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Our bosun Will Wale and James and John Graham<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And Will Campbell that\u00a0fameous young sailor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>There was one Robert Storr and Richard Balfour,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And our pilot was one John Currow;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There was one Henry, mate, with Archibal Consett\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And our foremast man was James MacMurrow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p
