Andrew Poleson remembered and sang just one verse of this ballad which he called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2015\/01\/20\/beautiful-nancy-of-yarmouth\/\">Jimmy and Nancy<\/a><\/span>.<br \/>\n(The Roud Index no.187 \u00a0lists\u00a0172 sources).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Lovers, I pray lend an ear to my story<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Take an example by this constant pair<br \/>\n<\/em><em>How love a young maiden who&#8217;s bright in her glory,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Beautiful Nancy of Yarmouth we hear.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>She was a rich merchant&#8217;s only daughter,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Heir unto\u00a0fifteen hundred a year.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A young man who courted her called\u00a0her his jewel.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Son of a gentleman who lived near.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Many long years this young maid he admired;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When they were\u00a0infants in love they agreed,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But\u00a0when of age this young couple arrived\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Cupid an arrow between them displayed.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>[They made a promise for to be married,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But when their parents the same came to know\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They took their beautiful charming daughter\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Separated apart that base and severe. ]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Her father\u00a0said, &#8220;Give o&#8217;er your proceedings ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For if against our way\u00a0you do wed,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Really for ever we mean\u00a0to disown you\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0If you marry\u00a0\u00a0one who is\u00a0so mean bred.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Her mother said, &#8220;You have\u00a0a rich\u00a0fortune; \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Besides, you are beautiful, charming and young.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You are a match, my\u00a0darling and jewel<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For any lord that is in Christendom.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8220;I need&#8230;&#8230;Now that&#8217;s about all I know&#8230;..&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then did reply this beautiful virgin,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8216;Riches and honor I both do defy ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If that I am denied of my dearest love\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Then farewell this world, which is all vanity.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;Jimmy is the man that I do admire,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He is the man that I do adore ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For to be greater I never desire ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>My heart is fixed to love no more.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then said her father, \u00a0&#8216;Tis my the powers above.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Why of all comforts would you bereave?\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Our love is fixed, never to remove.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then said the father, &#8216;A trip on the ocean\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Jimmy shall go in a ship of my own.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ll consent that he shall have my daughter\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When to fair Yarmouth again he returns.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;Honored father,&#8217; then said the two lovers,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8216;Since it is your will we are bound to obey;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Our constant hearts can never be parted\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But our eager desire no longer must stay.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then beautiful Nancy said. &#8216;Dearest Jimmy,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Here, take this ring, the pledge of my vows;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>With it my heart \u2014 keep it safe in your bosom,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Carry it with you wherever you go.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then in his arms he did closely infold her.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Whilst crystal tears like fountains did flow,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Crying, &#8216;My heart in return I do give you,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And you shall be present wherever I go.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;When on the ocean, my dear, I am sailing.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>How the heart of their beautiful daughter\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>With cursed gold strive to beguile.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Many a lord of fame, birth, and breeding\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Came for to court this young beautiful maiden,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But all of their presents and favors she slighted.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8216;Constant I&#8217;ll be to my jewel,&#8217; she said.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Now for a while we will leave this fair maiden\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And tell how the things with her lover did go.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>In the Island of Barbodoins the ship safe arrived,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But now observe this fatal overthrow.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Young Jimmy was comely in every feature.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A Barbodious lady whose riches was great\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>On him fixed her eyes; then she cried, &#8216;If I get not\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>This English sailor, I&#8217;ll die for his sake.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>She then dresses herself in gallant attire.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>With costly diamonds she plaited her hair ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A hundred slaves dressed in white to attend her ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Sent for this young man to come to them there.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;Come, noble sailor,&#8217; she cried, &#8216;can you fancy\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A lady whose fortunes and riches are great?\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A hundred slaves you shall have to attend you,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Music to charm you to your solemn sleep.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;In robes of gold I will deck you. my dear.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Pearls and rich jewels I&#8217;ll lay at your feet;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>In chariots of gold you shall ride at your pleasure ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If you can love me, then answer me straight.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Amazed with wonder while gazing she stood,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8216;Forbear, young lady,&#8217; at length he replied ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8216;In fair England I have vowed to a lady\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>At my return to make her my bride<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;She is a charming young beautiful creature.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> She has my heart, and I never can love ;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I distraction.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Crying, &#8216;Unfortunate maid ! thus to love<\/em><br \/>\n<em> One that does basely slight all my glory<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And of my possessions will not approve.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;Lords of renown their favors I have slighted;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Now must I die for a sailor so bold.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I must not \/>\n<em> Lifting her head from her soft downy pillow,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Strait to the casement she did repair.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>By the light of the moon that brightly was shining<\/em><br \/>\n<em> She spied her true love ; then he to her did say,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> &#8216;Your parents are sleeping; before they awaken,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Stir up, my dear creature, you must come away.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;Oh Jimmy,&#8217; she cried, &#8216;If my father shall hear you<\/em><br \/>\n<em> We should be ruined ; therefore quickly repair<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To the sea side and I will quickly meet you ;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With my own maid I&#8217;ll come to you there.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Her nightgown embroidered with silver and gold<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Carelessly around her body she throws.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With her two maids indeed to attend her<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To 30px\"><em>&#8216;Yes, fairest creature, I am your true lover,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Dead or alive you are to be my own.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I come for your vows, my dear; you must follow<\/em><br \/>\n<em> My body to my watery tomb.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8216;I for your sake did refuse gold and treasure,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Beauty and riches for you I other&#8217;s arms on the water was floating<\/em><br \/>\n<em> By the side of the ship on the watery main.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The cruel boatswain was struck with horror ;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Straight did confess the deed he had done.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Showing the letter that came from her father<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That was the cause of these lovers&#8217; doom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>On board the ship he was tried for murder<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And at the yardarm he was hanged for the same.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Her father broke his heart for his daughter<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Before the ship to harbour came.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Thus cursed gold has caused destruction.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Why should the rich strive after gain?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I hope this story will be a caution<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That cruel parents may never do the same.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>True love is better than jewels or treasure<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Riches can never buy true love you know,\u00a0,<br \/>\nBut this young couple lov&#8217;d out of measure,<br \/>\nWhich was the occasion of
