Differing\u00a0versions of it later appeared in broadsheets some of them lending confusion to this sorry\u00a0tale. \u00a0This version, which Andrew partly sings and then recites, seems also to have come from a broadsheet,\u00a0but Andrew\u00a0further confused the plot when he accidentally confused the names of two of the protagonists in his third stanza (highlighted). \u00a0The third man in the tale was the brother to the \u00a0Lady Anne, McVan, who was slain in a\u00a0duel with\u00a0Sir Niel. \u00a0Glengyle then arrives and\u00a0slays the victor but\u00a0for his pains is ostracised by Lady Anne who vows she will mourn the loss of her brother\u00a0for seven full years. \u00a0We have printed below\u00a0just some of\u00a0the many verses that Andrew recited, but more\u00a0verses\u00a0can be listened to here and a complete set can be read on a broadsheet version published by the <a href=\"http:\/\/ballads.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/search\/?query=Glengyle\">Bodleian library<\/a>.\u00a0 Roud index no. 1914.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>In yonder isle beyond Argyle,<\/em>\u00a0 w<em>here flocks and herds are plenty,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Lived a rich <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">squire\u00a0<\/span>whose sister fair,<\/em>\u00a0was<em>\u00a0the flower of all the country;<\/em><br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nA knight, Sir Niel, had woo&#8217;d her long, expecting \u00a0soon to marry,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A young highland laird her suit preferred,<\/em>\u00a0y<em>oung\u00a0handsome,\u00a0brisk\u00a0and merry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Long\u00a0had she woo&#8217;d the young <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Glengyle<\/span>\u00a0b<\/em><em>ecause he wrote sincerely,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But soon she found the brave <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Sir Niel<\/span>\u00a0h<\/em><em>ad won her heart entirely<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Till some lines\u00a0to her brother came,<\/em>\u00a0t<em>hat Niel had boasted proudly,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Of favours from the \u00a0lady Anne t<\/em><em>hat made him vow\u00a0thus\u00a0rudely.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I swear by all our friendship past <\/em>\u00a0t<em>hat e&#8217;er this time next morning,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That knight or I shall breathe our last;\u00a0<\/em><em>I&#8217;ll show him who he&#8217;s scorning.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>To meet on the\u00a0shore where proud waves roar,<\/em>\u00a0wa<em>s a challenge he defied him,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>E&#8217;er the sun was up those two youths met;<\/em>\u00a0n<em>o living creature nigh\u00a0them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[recites]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Why<em> should I fight with you MacVan<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<em>who never me offended<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And if I aye ye ill have done,<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<em>I&#8217;ll own my fault\u00a0and mend it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s not coming too fast is it?&#8221; \u00a0&#8221; No, that&#8217;s alright&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Is this thy boasted courage knave? \u00a0 Who would not now despise thee?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And if thou still will scorn to fight \u00a0I&#8217;ll let each dog\u00a0chastise thee<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Combined with guilt thy wondrous skill \u00a0From fate shall\u00a0neer defend thee<\/em><br \/>\n<em> My sister&#8217;s wrongs shall brace my arm.\u00a0This stroke to death shall send thee.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But this and many a well aim&#8217;d blow\u00a0the generous baron warded,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Being loath to harm so dear a friend,\u00a0himself he only guarded.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Till mad at being sore abused,\u00a0one\u00a0furious push he darted,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Which pierc&#8217;d the brains of bold MacVan who with a groan departed&#8230;..<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8230;&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Were did I\u00a0get that from? \u00a0Me sister, mistress Andrew Poleson&#8217;s mother&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And where do you think she got it from?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From me father, I doot&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2015\/01\/28\/glengyle\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,34],"tags":[50,105,159],"class_list":["post-1534","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-andrew-moar","category-a-h","tag-broadsheet-ballad","tag-jealous-love","tag-tragedy"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
