Despite his age Andrew\u00a0sang or recited a number of long ballads which he had memorised years earlier and he also provided \u00a0some fascinating local history connected with fishing and local customs.<\/p>\n<p>Because of its length Andrew chose to \u00a0sing just a few of the verses and recited the remainder. \u00a0He admitted to\u00a0forgetting some of the verses which we have added for the sake of completeness, taking them from Peter Buchan&#8217;s book (<em>Gleanings&#8230;<\/em>).\u00a0 The added verses are inset\u00a0to distinguish them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Come all you young lovers in Scotland draw near.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To\u00a0my sad story which. now ye shall hear.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Concerning two lovers which\u00a0liv&#8217;d in the North,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Among yon\u00a0high mountains that stand beyond Forth.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>This maid was a daughter of a gentleman.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To\u00a0the name of MacFarlane, and of the same clan:\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But Gregor was bom in a Highland Isle,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And by blood relation her cousin we style.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But where riches are wanting, we oftentimes see\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Few men are esteem-ed for their pedigree.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>His father was forc&#8217;d when he was a child,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To leave this re-al-m, and when\u00a0he was exil&#8217;d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>[His lands they were forfeit, as I let you know,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Because of rebellion, the truth for to show ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Bread, gold, and vast riches, he with him did give,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For his education, and how he might live. ]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>And solely he to the care of his friend,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Was left by his father for to be maintained,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He learn&#8217;d him indeed for to read and to write.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>In the rules of arithmetic he made him perfect.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>In Latin and French he had taught him also,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That he through the world was fit for to go.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The king with\u00a0recruiting, all hands did employ.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>While her father as a servant us-ed this young boy.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>In all kinds of drudgery he made him to serve\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But\u00a0still so he kept him as a corpse of reserve,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Such a beautiful young man was not in this place;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>None could compare with him in stature and grace.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>This charming Miss Kitty was oft in the way ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>One day, in love&#8217;s passion, she to him did say,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;My dear cousin Grigor, I&#8217;ve something to tell,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Which now from my bosom this day I reveal.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Will yon do for da tune?&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 &#8220;Aha &#8211; Tis enough to uphold us all gallant and brave.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>1 know that my parents for more riches are bent.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But a few years by nature will make them extinct ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To you my dear Gregor, I do make this vow,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That I never will marry another but you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>Then he consented, and flew to her arms,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And said my dear Kitty, Im kill&#8217;d with your charms\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But if your parents this fond love should know,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They soon will carve out my sad overthrow. ]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Of that, my dear Gregor, be silent I pray,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Tonight we will part, and meet the next day.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Under the broad oak, by the cave in the glen,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Where more of my mind unto you I&#8217;ll\u00a0explain.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Her mother next morning by the blink of her eye.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0Betwixt her and Gregor\u00a0great love did espy<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And she to her husband the same did\u00a0reveal,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Giving orders to watch them when\u00a0they\u00a0were in the field.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>All day then the old\u00a0father went walking about,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And hard upon her\u00a0he kept\u00a0a look out,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Till hard in the evening, she went to the glen,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Where Gregor was waiting to hear her explain\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The way they would manage, and make matters go.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Her father did follow now quickly\u00a0also.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He gently\u00a0stood over the&#8230; \u00a0 \u00a0 cave,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Hearing\u00a0there the discourses\u00a0how they would behave\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>At length\u00a0he advances, cries, &#8220;Gregor, what now.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Is this my\u00a0reward from an orphan as you?\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Behold,\u00a0I&#8217;ve maintained you since seven years old.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And now your intentions they seem rather\u00a0\u00a0bold.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;Two lines I can&#8217;t remember there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">[Then Gregor ask&#8217;d pardon, and this he did say,<br \/>\nSir, I&#8217;m at your disposel, then do as you may,]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The old man in a passion there chiding did stand.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Till Kitty took courage and then speech into hand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8220;Why\u00a0mean you, dear father, on us for to frown?\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Is this man\u00a0a beggar? I&#8217;m sure he&#8217;s our own;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He&#8217;s of our own kindred, our flesh and our blood,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And you very well know his behaviour is good.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">It&#8217;s him that I choose for a husband and shall,<br \/>\nGo give all your riches to whom that you will :<br \/>\nDo you\u00a0think l&#8217;m a hog or a horse to be sold<br \/>\nAway to some numbskull for nothing but gold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">[The father in a rage to the mother did go,<br \/>\nAnd told the proceedings with sorrow and woe,<br \/>\nYet seem&#8217;d as his anger that night had been gone,<br \/>\nLest that young Gregor the place should abscond.]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">But he sent a message into Inverness,<br \/>\nWhich brought forth\u00a0a party young Gregor to press,<br \/>\nAnd to make ready he gave no time gave we hear,<br \/>\nHe ask&#8217;d but one favour, a word of his dear ;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Who\u00a0being refused, the old man with\u00a0a frown,<br \/>\nSays \u00a0soldiers can have sweethearts in every town;<br \/>\nAt this the young lady did weep\u00a0bitterly,<br \/>\n&#8220;May the heavens requite you for your cruelty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>[Young Gregor took courage and marched away ;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When his captain view&#8217;d him this to him did say \u2014\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For the lady that lov&#8217;d you, I pity her case.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Who&#8217;s lost such a beauty and sweet blooming face.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>His lady cried out, what a wretch can he be,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Caus&#8217;d press this young man for no injury.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>His long yellow hair to his haunches hang down,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>0&#8217;er his broad shoulders, from ear to ear round.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>Now Gregor considering his pitiful case,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Received the bounty and swore to the peace,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>His captain unto him a furlough he gave,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To see his dear Katty once more he did crave.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>Two lines he sent to her by a solid hand,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That he under the oaktree at midnight would stand.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For to wait upon her and hear her complaint,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And there for to meet him she was well content.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>Her vows she renewed with tears not a few.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And a gold ring, on his finger as a token she threw,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Which was not to move, come death or come life,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Till that happy moment he made her his wife.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em>She fain would go with him, but he answered.
