J. Kennedy&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Universal Irish Song Book <\/em>(New York, 1884); but in \u00a0almost all cases his version\u00a0allows the song to flow better within the line. (Roud no. 923)<br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Andrew did\u00a0not\u00a0sing\u00a0a few verses that were in Kennedy&#8217;s book so we have added them\u00a0\u00a0(offsetting them slightly).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">At the sign of the Bell, on the road to Clonmel<\/span><br \/>\nPaddy Hagerty kept a neat\u00a0cabin;<br \/>\n<em>Sold pig\u2019s meat and bread, kept lodgers besides,<br \/>\n<\/em><\/em><em>Was\u00a0well liked in\u00a0the country he lived in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Himself and his wife, they both struggled with\u00a0life.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And\u00a0in\u00a0weekdays, Pat mended the ditches,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But on Sundays he dressed in a coat of the best,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But his pride was his old leather breeches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>[For twenty-one years, at least so it appears,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>His father those breeches had run in.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The morning he died, he to his bedside<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Called Paddy, his beautiful son, in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>Advice then he gave, ere he went to the grave.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>He bid him take care of his riches.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Says he: &#8220;It\u2019s no use to pop into my shoes,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But I wish you\u2019d step into my breeches.&#8221;]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Now last winter&#8217;s\u00a0snow left vittals\u00a0so low,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>That\u00a0Paddy was ate out completely.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The snow coming down, he could not get\u00a0to town.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Thoughts of hunger it\u00a0bothered him greatly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>One night as he lay a-dreaming away<br \/>\n<\/em><em>About ghosts, fairies, spirits\u00a0and witches,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>He heard an uproar just outside\u00a0<\/em><em>the door,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>So he jumped and pulled\u00a0on his breeches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Says Bryan M\u2019Guirk, in\u00a0a voice like a Turk,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>&#8220;Come Paddy, and\u00a0get us some eating.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Says big Andy Moore: &#8220;We&#8217;ll burst open the door,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Sure\u00a0this is no night to be waitin&#8217;.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The words were scarce spoke when the door it was\u00a0\u00a0broke,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And they crowded round Paddy like leeches.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And they swore by the mob, if they didn\u2019t get grub,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>They would eat him clean out of his breeches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>So\u00a0Paddy in dread slipped away to the\u00a0bed,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>That held Judy, his own darling wife in,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And there it was\u00a0agreed they would have\u00a0a feed.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>So he slipped out and brought a big knife in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>He&#8217;s cut up the waist of his breeches, the best,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And he&#8217;s ripped out the buttons and stitches,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And he cut them in stripes in\u00a0the way they would do\u00a0tripes,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And he boiled them his old leather breeches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The\u00a0tripes were stewed, on a dish they were strewed.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And the boys roared\u00a0out: &#8220;Lord-be-thankit!&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But Hagerty\u2019s wife was afraid of her life.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>So she\u00a0thought it high time for to shank it,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>[The boys they all smiled: for they thought Pat had boiled*<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Some mutton or\u00a0beef of the richest;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But little they knew it was leather burgoo,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Made\u00a0of Paddy\u2019s old worn-out breeches.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>As they messed round\u00a0the stuff; oh says Darby,&#8221;It\u2019s tough.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Says Paddy: &#8220;You\u2019re no judge of mutton,&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>When Bryan M\u2019Guirk, on the point of his\u00a0fork,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Held\u00a0up a big ivory button.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Says Darby: &#8220;What\u2019s that? Sure I thought it was fat.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Bryan leaps to his feet, and he screeches:<br \/>\n<\/em><em>&#8220;By the powers above!
