\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0SA1971.214.5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Known by several Whalsay men,\u00a0 this ballad of derring-do has a long history which dates from December 1669 when\u00a0 Captain John Kempthorne in the warship, <em>Mary Rose<\/em>, fought off seven Algerian pirate vessels during a voyage to Cadiz.\u00a0 Kempthorne was knighted for his efforts (Palmer, 42).\u00a0 By the 18th century names had changed and in Firth\u2019s collection <em>Naval songs and Ballads<\/em> this song was called <em>Captain Mansfield\u2019s Fight with the Turkes at Sea<\/em>.\u00a0 <span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><strong>Robert Hutchison<\/strong>\u00a0sings a shorter \u00a0version \u00a0to a different tune (scroll down to find it).\u00a0<\/span>The Roud index (no. 951) contains just 4 versions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u2018Twas of a ship from her ballast port<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With anchors two upon her bow<\/em><br \/>\n<em> She steered a course right east south east<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Just as the wind it did allow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We had not sailed from our ballast port<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A league but thirteen off the land<\/em><br \/>\n<em> When we espied ten Turkey men of war<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hauled to the wind as they could stand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8220;Come strike, come strike, you English dogs;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Come strike, and come down on our lea.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> You\u2019ll come on board this hour and moment<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Our slaves for ever for to be.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then he spake our captain bold,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Oh what a courageous man was he:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Before I lower one fore-yard down<\/em><br \/>\n<em> You may come on board and speak with me.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8220;Go up, go up, my jolly bosun,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Up to the mainmast top go ye<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And there you\u2019ll spread King George\u2019s flag,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For under it we\u2019ll live or dee.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8220;Go up, go up, my jolly sailors.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Up to the foremast top go ye<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And there you\u2019ll spread your sails right \u00a0trig,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> See that you do it cleverly.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Powder and shot we wanted none<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To sponge our guns as you may see;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> We had not fought one half an hour<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Till we perceived one Turkey flee<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We fought on like champions
