The narrator of much of the ballad is a young veteran of Waterloo who falls in love with Nancy, a woman in a green mantle. Nancy initially rejects him until she discovers that the narrator saw her lover die at Waterloo, and was given her lover&#8217;s gold ring. The narrator and Nancy eventually marry. Love influenced by coincidental or supernatural events like these was a common feature of the ballad tradition.\u201d This explanation, however, \u00a0does not quite equate with the course of events given out\u00a0below.\u00a0 Roud no. 714<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>As I walked out one evening, one evening late in June<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To view the green fields and the meadows in bloom,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> There I beheld a fair maid she appeared like a queen<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With her costly fine robes and her mantle of green.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I stood in amazement, I gazed with surprise;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For I thought she was an angel just fallen from the skies.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Her eyes they shone like diamonds her cheeks were like the rose;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> She was one of those wonders that Nature does approve.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I stepped up unto her and this to her did say:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cIf you will join in wedlock, love, it\u2019s married we shall be;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I\u2019ll dress you in fine raiments, you\u2019ll appear like a queen<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With your costly fine robes and your mantle of green\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cOh no my young and noble man, you must me excuse,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For I will wed with no man so you will be refused;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Through the green, green woods I\u2019ll wander to shun a young man\u2019s ways,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For the lad that I love dearly lies in faint\u00a0 Waterloo\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cOh well if you won\u2019t marry me pray tell me your love\u2019s name,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For I have been in battle and may have known the same\u201d.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cDraw near to my garments, its splendid to be seen,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For his name is embroidered in my mantle of green\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I drew a little nearer and this I did behold<\/em><br \/>\n<em> My forename and surname in letters of bright\u00a0gold.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The name of William Reilly appeared in my view.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cHe was my gallant\u00a0comrade in faint\u00a0Waterloo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We fought for the victory and the bullets loud did fly<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And many a young and noble man on the battlefield did lie.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> We fought for three days till the fourth afternoon;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I received his dead summons on the 19th of June.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>And as he lay dying these words I heard him say:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cIf she\u2019d been standing by me how happy would I die\u201d.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cOh since she\u2019s gone and left me, no other one I\u2019ll take,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But to lounge in groves and valleys I will wander for his sake\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Oh William being \u00a0stunned \u00a0no longer could he stand<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cOh Nancy, lovely Nancy, its I that\u2019s on your hand<\/em><br \/>\n<em> All in your father\u2019s garden beneath yon shady trees<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Where I rolled you in my arms in your mantle of green\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>This couple they got married, we heard people say<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And they had grand attendance on their wedding day<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Now peace is proclaimed and the wars they are o\u2019er,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> You\u2019re welcome to my arms again sweet Nancy once more.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/08\/mantle-of-green-the\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35,33],"tags":[121,130],"class_list":["post-215","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-i-p","category-willie-williamson","tag-napoleonic-war","tag-returned-lover"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
