H. Firth in his <i>Naval Songs and Ballads<\/i> (1898) \u00a0 commented somewhat disparagingly:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cThe search for the North-West Passage, namely the voyage of Sir John Franklin, and the long continued efforts to discover his fate also attracted the attention of writers of street ballads but neither <i>Lady Fanklin\u2019s Lament<\/i> nor the\u00a0 <i>Lament on the Fate of Sir John Franklin<\/i> and his crew deserve reprinting.\u00a0 The last was written in 1860; ten years later the old street ballads practically became extinct\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Firth\u00a0didn\u2019t count on the tenacity with which songs which had a special resonance for some occupations might continue to be sung a whole century\u00a0later.\u00a0 In the 1970s many Shetlanders had older relatives who had told them about their whaling experiences in the icy waters of Greenland and South Georgia. Possibly there were some Shetlanders among the crew of Sir John Franklin\u2019s three ships, for they made their last call for supplies in Orkney before heading off to the north\u2013west, never to return.<\/p>\n<p>Willie&#8217;s version is the longest of the three versions recorded.\u00a0 The other two are provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/11\/fate-of-franklin-the-2\/\"><strong>John Hughson<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/09\/fate-of-franklin-the\/\">Andrew Poleson<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0 \u00a0 Roud index no. 437.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>As we were sailing along the deep,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Snug in my hammock I lay fast asleep;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I dreamed a dream I thought was true<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Concerning Franklin and his brave crew.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u2018Tis seven long years since that ship of fame<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Sailed with my husband across the main,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With a hundred seamen of courage stout<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The Nor-West passage for to find out<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>There was Captain Parry of High renown<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Captain Flett of our own dear town,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> There was Captain Brown and many more<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Who have coasted long on the Arctic shore<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>They sailed east, they sailed west<\/em><br \/>\n<em> On the coast of Greenland where they thought best;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> O\u2019er hill and dale they have explored;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> O\u2019er ice-clad mountains they vainly strode.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>In Baffin\u2019s Bay where the whale-fish blow<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The fate of Franklin no man knows.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> He left his home like many more;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> He left his home to return no more.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Now seven long years has gone and past;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Seven long years of the biting blast<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Have swept o\u2019er the graves where those heroes fell;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Their dreadful suffering no man can tell.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">&#8220;That\u2019s about all I know of it \u2013 I think there\u2019s more of it but I\u2019m not so sure what the other bit is.\u00a0 I might get it later on.
