Logan in his collection <i>A Pedlar\u2019s Pack<\/i> (1869, p. 413). \u00a0Emigration to Canada and America was common among Scots at this time but the American War of Independence began in 1775 and this ballad is obviously connected with it. \u00a0Several broadside printers printed\u00a0this ballad, including Sanderson of Edinburgh, which is probably from where Andrew learned his version \u2013 \u201cWhen I was a young chap more than 40 years ago.&#8221; \u00a0 A later recording\u00a0(<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">SA1974.237.7)<\/span>, made at the Cook\u2019s House, where older men gather and socialize while the meat for a wedding feast is boiled up, was\u00a0sung at the same pitch and with identical words.\u00a0 Clearly Andrew had soundly memorized this ballad for such occasions.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">(Roud Index no. 521.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>When the sons of north Britain were forced for to range<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And seek foreign countries and\u00a0\u00a0lands that were strange<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Amongst that number one Donald Munro<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Away to America he quickly did go<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Two sons with a brother he forced for to stay<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Because of the passage he could not well pay<\/em><br \/>\n<em> When seven long twelve-months were over and gone<\/em><br \/>\n<em> They went to their uncle one day all alone<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>And begg\u2019d his consent to go over the sea<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That they with their parents in plenty might be<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To which said their uncle \u201cDear children you know<\/em><br \/>\n<em> You have got no money therefore you can\u2019t go.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cThe price of your passage you know will be dear<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I would have you advised to stay with me here.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Being so discontented no comfort could find<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The thoughts of their parents did run through their minds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>On leaving their uncle they went till they found<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A regiment of soldiers to America was bound,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To which they enlisted to go over the sea<\/em><br \/>\n<em> In hopes with their parents in plenty might be.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But when they arriv-ed the country they spied<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Surrounded with rivals on every side<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With humble submission they both of them went<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Unto their good captain and begged his consent<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>For to go up the country their parents to see<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Which their good captain at last did agree<\/em><br \/>\n<em> So leaving the camp with a boy for their guide<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To show them the place where their parents reside.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>They had not gone far when one of them did say<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cIf we just could find our dear parents today<\/em><br \/>\n<em> How happy they would be to find us so near,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For of our enlisting they never did hear.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>On walking a little further they came to a grove<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Where the trees and the bushes all seemed for to move.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> This being two <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">robbers<\/span> that lurked in the wood \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0[rebels, in some broadsheets]<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Soon pointed the place where these two brothers stood [their pieces]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>And lodged their bullets within their two breasts<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And rushed at the prey like two ravenous beasts<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To take all their money and strip off their clothes<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And finding them not dead dispatched them with blows.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The oldest in expiring just lifted his head<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And seeing them approaching in agony he cried,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cOh you cruel monsters, you bloodthirsty hounds<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Why did thou kill us before we were found.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Our parents we were seeking this day with great care<\/em><br \/>\n<em> If they know we are dead I am sure they will grieve<\/em><br \/>\n<em> They left us in Scotland seven twelve-months ago<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Perhaps you may know them, their names were Munro.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>At this said the old man he stood in amaze<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And viewing these persons with greater surprise<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And seeing them lie bleeding says \u201cWhat have I done<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Cursed be my own hands I\u2019ve killed my own sons.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cThen if you\u2019re my father the oldest replied<\/em><br \/>\n<i>I am glad that I&#8217;ve seen you before that I died.<br \/>\n<\/i> <em> But since it is so that no better can be,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> We\u2019ll blame our hard fortune, dear father, not thee.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Don\u2019t tell my ag\u2019d mother if still she does live,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For if she knows we are dead I am sure she will grieve.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Then having this said then down dropped his head<\/em><br \/>\n<em> His father observing him found he was dead.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But I\u2019ll sink beneath sorrow, give way to despair<\/em><br \/>\n<em> An\u2019 linger my life on [till
