Twenty-two versions appear in the Greig-Duncan Aberdeenshire collection alone, many with tunes very similar to Andrew\u2019s tune and over 100 sources are listed by Steve Roud \u2013 no. 399 in his index.<br \/>\nWith some helpful prompting from his friend Gracie Anderson, Andrew sang it, but in rather a halting and perfunctory manner for he didn&#8217;t feel much like singing: his brother had died a few days earlier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I was brought up in Sheffield, though not of high degree,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>My parents they adored me, they had no child but me;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I roved about for pleasure where\u2019er my fancy lay,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Till I was bound apprentice, then all my joys they fled<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I didn\u2019t like my master, he didn\u2019t use me well,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I took a resolution not long with him to dwell;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Unknown to my poor parents, from him I ran away,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I steered my course to London, and woe be on that day.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>A handsome young lady from Holland was there<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She offered me great wages to serve her for a year;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She offered me great wages to go across the sea,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To live with her to Holland, which proved my destiny.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I hadn\u2019t been in Holland one week but two or three<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When my proud mistress fell very fond of me;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She offered me great wages her money and her land,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If I would consent to marry her, and be at her command.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Said I, &#8220;Dear honoured lady, I cannot wed you both,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For I was lately promised, I swore a solemn oath<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That I\u2019ll wed none but Polly, your own dear chamber maid,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Forgive me, my dear mistress, she has my heart betrayed.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>She flew into a passion and from me she did run;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She vowed to be revenged on me before it was long;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She was so sore perplexed she couldn\u2019t be my wife,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She soon found out a project to take away my life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>One day as I was walking all in the garden green,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The flowers they were springing, most beautiful to be seen,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A gold ring from her finger as she was passing by,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She slipped it in my pocket and for it I must die.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>She swore that I had robbed her, and for that I was brought<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Before an aged justice, to answer for my faults;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Long time I pleaded innocent; but all to no avail,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She swore, she swore against me, that I was set in jail.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But now alas th\u2019assizes is coming on apace,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And when the grave old justice the sentence on me passed;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>From the place of my confinement I was brought unto a tree;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Oh God reward my mistress, for she has ruined me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>All ye that stand around me, my dreadful fate to see,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Don\u2019t glory in my downfall, but rather, pity me;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Believe me, I am innocent; I\u2019ll bid this world adieu;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Farewell my lovely Polly, I died for loving you.<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/09\/sheffield-apprentice-the\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19,36],"tags":[50,100],"class_list":["post-294","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-andrew-poleson","category-q-z","tag-broadsheet-ballad","tag-innocent-convicted"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
