(See also <em>The Anchor&#8217;s Weighed<\/em>,\u00a0which had been sung a few minutes earlier).<\/p>\n<p>The Ramillies was a large warship with 90 guns, and almost 100 yrs old when she was driven ashore on the Devon coast during a hurricane in February 1760.\u00a0 One account says that only 26 of the 708 crew were saved when her anchors dragged and her stern smashed on the rocks.\u00a0 Numerous versions of the ballad survived into the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century.<\/p>\n<p>A seven-verse rendering of this ballad \u00a0with a was also recorded for\u00a0the School of Scottish Studies <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">by Alan Bruford\u00a0<\/span>from Orkneyman Peter Pratt.\u00a0 We have added six of Peter\u2019s verses below; they were\u00a0printed in <i>Tocher<\/i> vol. 3, 1971 p. 90 with a tune very similar to that sung here. \u00a0Peter&#8217;s performance can be heard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tobarandualchais.co.uk\/en\/fullrecord\/96338\/1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">here<\/span><\/a>. Two other versions are listed in the Roud <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vwml.org\/search\/search-roud-indexes?ts=1459337731177&amp;collectionfilter=RoudFS;RoudBS&amp;qtext=Bold%20Ramillies#\">index<\/a><\/span> (no. 523)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u2018Twas on a day, a brave summers\u2019 day<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The bold Ramilles from her anchor she lay \u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0On the very same day that the gale came on<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0And the bold Ramillies from her anchor ran.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Our topgallant masts and yards being struck<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And everything on board being neat and snug,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>With close-reefed topsails neatly spread<br \/>\n<\/em><em>We were thinking for to weather the old Ram\u2019s Head.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>But the rain it came down with a dreadful shock;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The sea spread over our foretop;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Our ship she would neither stay\u00a0 nor wear<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Nor yet gather way enough to steer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Our captain piped \u201dAll hands ahoy\u201d:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cCome listen unto me while I pipe and cry;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Come launch out your boats your lives for to save,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Or else the seas will prove your grave.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then overboard our boats were tossed:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Some went in them but they were lost.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Some went to one place and some to another<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But the watch down below they all were smothered.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>When this sad news to Plymouth came<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That the Ramillee was lost and the most of her men,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There was only one that was left for to tell<\/em><br \/>\n<em>How the ship behaved in the dreadful gale.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Come all you pretty maidens, whoever you may be,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That has got your true lovers on the wide and open sea,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Pray for them whom you do adore<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And pray for their safe return on shore.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/09\/bold-ramillies-the\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19,34],"tags":[140,146,163],"class_list":["post-325","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-andrew-poleson","category-a-h","tag-sea-ballad","tag-shipwreck","tag-warship"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
