She lost the her propellor fan during a heavy SSW gale in lat. 66 N, about 80 miles off the coast of Norway. The crew jettisoned her deck cargo and rigged a jury mast to carry some sail, but <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">on February 7th 1871\u00a0<\/span>during a hurricane from the SSW, she\u00a0struck on the small isle of\u00a0 East Linga which lies about 3.5km. off the east coast of Whalsay.\u00a0 She almost immediately broke in two and, as this bald and sad account tells us, just two men were saved, namely\u00a0 Daniel Coleman and Edward\u00a0Johnson.\u00a0 The cargo of deal timber is reported to have eventually floated ashore on a number of neighbouring\u00a0isles including Yell, Fetlar and Unst.\u00a0 Parts of the wreck still lie in Gun Geo\u00a0 on East Linga.\u00a0 Johnny mentioned the name of another of the numerous vessels wrecked on Whalsay\u2019s shores\u00a0 &#8211; this was the <em>Nordstjernen<\/em> (North Star) heading for Denmark from Hull, but which beached at Isbister with a cargo of coal on April 6<sup>th<\/sup> 1880 after its sails had split.<\/p>\n<p>We have added and inset\u00a0some extra verses not sung by John but which were noted\u00a0\u00a0down by one of our contributors,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/29\/poleson-betty\/\"> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Betty Poleson<\/span><\/a> in her own manuscript notebook collection of sixty songs. \u00a0The direct and detailed telling of the story suggests that the song might have been\u00a0composed by a Whalsay person but Andy Sandison informs us that it was made\u00a0by Sinclair Irvine whose home was in Lunnasting nearby on mainland Shetland. \u00a0He was a\u00a0ship&#8217;s carpenter but\u00a0was also \u00a0reputed to be quite a song\u00a0maker: his song appears nowhere in print.\u00a0 Andy mentioned that more information about Sinclair Irvine can be found in the Shetland Archives Ref. D.9\/113b\/19.<br \/>\nRoud no. 25908.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Come all ye landsmen and seamen all and listen now to me;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>I\u2019ll tell you of a very sad story that happened on the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The Pacific was a steamship and built of iron strong,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Unto the port of Liverpool this vessel did belong.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>She had been a voyage to Norroway and was returning home<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And on the rocks of a\u00a0Shetland Isle she met her fatal doom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>[&#8216;Twas in the month of February \u00a0 A heavy gale did blow<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The Pacific having lost her fan \u00a0 Went tossing to and fro<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>Alas for them poor sailors\u00a0\u00a0What comfort could they find<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When their ship just like a helpless log \u00a0 Drove straight before the wind<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>It was on a Tuesday afternoon \u00a0 She bore down on the land<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That every soul onboard they \u00a0knew \u00a0 That night their ship would strand.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>They tried to launch the longboat, but before they got it done<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A heavy billow broke on board and dashed her on a stone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>They tried to launch the lifeboat; they were a stout brave crew,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But a heavy billow broke on board and parted her in two.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>While two upon her foredeck by chance did reach the shore<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And twenty-six on her main deck they sank to rise no more.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>[Such pity struck these two men \u00a0 To see their shipmates drown<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But on the isle their lot was hard \u00a0 No people could be found.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em> They heist the flag upon the isle, which the Whalsa men did spy,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But they could not get to their relief the sea did run so high.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><em>The fishermen of Whalsa they were so bold and brave<br \/>\nThat they were willing to risk their lives, these poor men\u2019s lives to save.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>They double-manned the six-oared boat to try for their relief<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But the sea was liking too fond of them they had to return with grief.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">[<em>On Friday it did blow a gale \u00a0 To them they could not get<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But Saturday was more moderate\u00a0 \u00a0To them they did succeed<\/em>.]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>They had to live in fishermen\u2019s huts, seaweed had been their food\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And also limpets and fish rigs they were both forced to eat. \u00a0 \u00a0[fish bones]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/11\/wreck-of-the-pacific-the\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,25,36],"tags":[140,146],"class_list":["post-392","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-john-hughson","category-songs","category-q-z","tag-sea-ballad","tag-shipwreck"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
