The lyrics give no reason why the ship never returned, but as long as men put to sea their ships can be lost without a trace due to weather, un-seaworthiness, or many other causes \u2013 including\u00a0piracy. In the nineteenth century, with no weather forecasting, radar or radio, this was not an uncommon event. (Roud no. 775).<\/p>\n<p>John heard his father singing it.\u00a0 He added that many new songs have come in during the past twenty years and that young people are not singing these songs now, adding rather sadly, \u201cThey don\u2019t seem to sing much now, anyway, the young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below John\u2019s text we have added a version collected in the USA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>A pale-faced boy said to his loving mother,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cI must cross the deep blue sea,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>For they tell me for a fact in some foreign country<br \/>\n<\/em><em>There is health and wealth for me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>It was on a summer\u2019s day when the wind was blowing<br \/>\n<\/em><em>With a soft and sighing breeze,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>When a ship set sail wi\u2019 her cargo in<br \/>\n<\/em><em>For a home beyond the seas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Did she ever return, no she never returned<br \/>\n<\/em><em>An\u2019 her fate is still unknown;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>For from that day to this day there\u2019s fond ones been watching<br \/>\n<\/em><em>For the ship that will never return.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>There were fond ones watching with fond affection<br \/>\n<\/em><em>As she kissed her darling boy,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>An\u2019 she sent him off with a smile and a blessing<br \/>\n<\/em><em>To the ship that will never return.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>And we\u2019ll settle down in a snug little cottage<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And we\u2019ll spend all the money we\u2019ve earned,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But alas, poor boy, he has sailed away<br \/>\n<\/em><em>On the ship that will never return.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><strong>&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>Ship that Never Returned<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 From Harry B.
