It very quickly found widespread circulation in broadsheets issued by numerous printers (Roud index no. 830).<br \/>\nWhalsay versions stay very close to broadsheet texts \u2013 see for instance the copy in the National Library of Scotland:- <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.nls.uk\/broadsides\/broadside.cfm\/id\/16451\/criteria\/Alma\">http:\/\/digital.nls.uk\/broadsides\/broadside.cfm\/id\/16451\/criteria\/Alma<\/a>. \u00a0The ballad clearly must have travelled far and we are grateful to the American ballad enthusiast Charles Biada: \u00a0he\u00a0 emailed \u00a0us to say\u00a0that, &#8220;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Cecil Sharp collected an American parody of this song from a Confederate veteran named Philander Fitzgerald, altered to describe a wildly apocryphal Southern victory at the Battle of Shiloh.&#8221; \u00a0You can find Fitzgerald&#8217;s verses if you click <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vwml.org.uk\/search?qtext=battle%20of%20shiloh&amp;ts=1462907363347&amp;collectionfilter=HHA;SBG;LEB;JHB;GB;COL;CC;DCD;GG;AGG;PG;HAM;MK;FK;EML;MN;TFO;CJS1;CJS2;FSBW;RVW1;RVW2;AW#\">here<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0The music transcription given in the second entry on that page shows us that the\u00a0tune sung by Fitzgerald is very different from the fine strong air sung in Whalsay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The battle-cry <i>Faugh-a-ballagh! <\/i>(Gaelic for \u2018Clear the way!\u2019) mentioned in the penultimate verse\u00a0is the motto of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, now known as the Royal Irish Regiment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>You loyal Britons pray draw near<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Unto the news I\u2019ve brought you here;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>With joy each British heart does cheer<br \/>\n<\/em><em>For the victory gained at Alma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>It was on September the eighteenth day,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>In spite of the salt sea\u2019s dashing spray,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>We landed safe in the Crimee<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Upon our route for Alma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>That night we lay on the cold, cold ground,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>No tents nor shelter could be found;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>With rain we all were nearly drowned<br \/>\n<\/em><em>To cheer our hearts for Alma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Next morning a burning sun did rise<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Beneath the eastern cloudless skies;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Our gallant chief Lord Raglan cries,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cPrepare to march for Alma.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>And, when the Alma came in view,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The stoutest heart it would subdue<br \/>\n<\/em><em>To see the Russians\u2019 motley crew<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Upon the heights of Alma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>They were so strongly fortified<br \/>\n<\/em><em>With batteries on the mountainside,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Our general viewed their force and cried,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>&#8220;We&#8217;ll get hard work at Alma.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Lord Raglan and Marshal St. Arnaud<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Our gallant men to victory led,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And with the Frenchmen by our side<br \/>\n<\/em><em>We gained the heights of Alma<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The balls did fall as thick as rain<br \/>\n<\/em><em>When we the batteries strove to gain,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And many a hero there was slain<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Upon the heights of Alma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The Thirty-third, the Seventh and Fusiliers,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>They climbed the hill and gave three cheers,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>When \u201cFaugh-a-ballagh!\u201d did rend our ears<br \/>\n<\/em><em>From Hibernian sons at Alma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Our Highland lads in kilt and hose,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>They were not last you may suppose;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>They boldly faced the Russian foes<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And gained the heights of Alma.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/11\/battle-of-alma-the-2\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,19,34],"tags":[51,70],"class_list":["post-407","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-grace-anderson","category-andrew-poleson","category-a-h","tag-broadside-ballad","tag-crimean-war"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
