\u00a0\u00a0<strong>[<\/strong><strong>A Tar for all Weathers] \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0SA1974.07.1 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The words of this song appear to have come from the pen of the musician and theatre proprietor Charles Dibdin (1745-1814) who composed numerous patriotic songs of sea and war and whose music stayed popular for decades after his death.\u00a0 The text was often printed in small collections such as <em>The Universal Songster<\/em> (vol iii, London 1826) and among the earliest was <em>The Edinburgh Musical Miscellany<\/em> (1793. vol.ii, p. 91).\u00a0 This strong modal melody that Grace sings is not Dibdin\u2019s tune but one that is possibly\u00a0far older and more a part of oral tradition than any songs performed\u00a0in the fashionable London theatres during\u00a0Dibdin\u2019s time.\u00a0\u00a0 (Roud index no. 25912).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We lows\u2019d from the Downs in the Nancy,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> My boys how she smack\u2019d through the breeze!<\/em><br \/>\n<em> She\u2019s the best sailing ship to my fancy<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That ever did sail the salt seas.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> So farewell to the fair white cliffs of Britain,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Our girls and our dear native shore<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For if some hard rock she should split on,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> We\u2019ll never see them any more.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>But sailors are born to all weathers,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Great guns blow you high, blow you low,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> When duty binds us all together,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And where the gale drives we must go.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>As we entered the Gut of Gibraltar<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I verily thought she would sink,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For the winds there all seemed for to alter,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And she reeled just as tho\u2019 she were drunk.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The squall blew our mainsail to and faster,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And black as the check [?]\u00a0was the sky,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> When truly a doleful disaster<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Befell three poor seamen and I.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Ben Buntline, Bill Shroud, and Dick Handsail,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> By a blast that came furious and hard,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Just while we were furling the mainsail,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Was every soul swept
