Hutchison. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0[<\/b><b>William Hollander; The Flying Cloud] <\/b>\u00a0<b>SA1974.11.13 \u2013 SA1974.12.1<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">For two other very similar but shorter versions recorded in Whalsay \u00a0\u2013 by\u00a0<strong>Grace Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>William Hutchison (Creadieknowe)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 scroll down below past Robbie&#8217;s text.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0 around 80 different versions\u00a0 of this \u2018Come all ye\u2019 ballad listed in the Roud index (no. 1802)\u00a0 where they are mostly given the title <i>The Flying Cloud.\u00a0 <\/i>However, this has nothing to do with the famous American record-breaking clipper of the same name.\u00a0 The song&#8217;s origin is a mystery and the American folklorist Horace Beck reported:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201dNo one knows its origin, its dates, or the identity of any of the characters concerned. Collectors greet it with more mixed emotions than any other song. Shay refers to it as,<br \/>\n&#8216;A song which probably had some popularity in the dives alongshore, but it was not sung aboard ship.&#8217; On the other hand, Rickaby maintained that at one time the ability to sing this song through was a prerequisite to being allowed to work in the Michigan lumber camps.\u00a0 Varied, also, are the opinions as to the age of the piece; they range from some time fairly early in the nineteenth century up to the twentieth century. &#8221; (see <i>Journal of American Folklore<\/i>, vol 66, 1953).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Robbie\u2019s<\/strong> version is as complete\u00a0 and well put together as any other.\u00a0 He learned it from his uncle, able-seaman Peter Hutchison, and mentioned that several other Whalsay men knew this ballad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>My name is Edward Anderson as you may understand,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>In Waterford where I was born in Erin\u2019s lovely land;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>My father reared me tenderly in fear of god-like ways<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Never thinking that I\u2019d live to die \u2018neath\u00a0 Cuba\u2019s sunny skies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>My father bound me to a trade in Waterford\u2019s fair town;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>He bound me to a cooper by the name of William Brown;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>I served my master faithfully for eighteen months or more<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Then shipped on board the Ocean Queen for Valparaiso shore<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>While lyin\u2019 in Valparaiso\u00a0 I met in with Captain Moore,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Commander of The Flying Cloud sailing out for Baltimore.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>It was with him that I did agree on a slave voyage for to go<br \/>\n<\/em><em>To the burning plains of Cuba where the sugar canes does grow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Oh we soon tossed o\u2019er the ragin\u2019 seas and landed safe on shore.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Five hundred of those poor men from the native homes we tore;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>We dragged them up upon our deck and tossed them down below<br \/>\n<\/em><em>For eighteen inches to the man was all that we could stow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We weighed our anchor, put to sea, our cargo was of slaves.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Been better for those poor men had they been in their graves,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>For a plague and fever came on board swept half of them away,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>So we dragged their bodies up on deck and strewed them in the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>[continued on the next\u00a0tape]\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then after some days sailing we reached the Virginian shore<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And we sold them to a planter to be slaves for evermore;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>To plough up rice and sugar fields beneath the blazing sun;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>To toil away their wretched lives before their race was run.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Then when our money was all spent we came on board again<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And Captain Moore called us on deck and said to us, his men,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cThere\u2019s gold in plenty to be had out on the Spanish Main,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>My boys if you\u2019ll with me agree I\u2019ll show you how it\u2019s gained.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We all agreed except five young men who wanted for to land<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And two of them was Boston men an\u2019 two from Newfoundland.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The other one was an Irishman belongin\u2019 to Tramore.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Oh how I wish I\u2019d joined those men and stayed with them on shore.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Her sails was white as the drifted snow on them there was no speck<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And seventy-five brass mounted guns she carried on her deck.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Her great long gun between her spars an\u2019 swivelled it did go<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And her magazines of shot and shell was stored away below.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Oh we sank an\u2019 plundered many ships down on the Spanish Main<br \/>\n<\/em><em>An\u2019 many a mother\u2019s son we killed beneath our blazing guns,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Until a Spanish man-of-war, our dungeon, hove in view,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>An\u2019 he fired a shot across our bows, a\u00a0signal to heave to.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>To this we gave no answer but steered before the wind<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Till a chain shot struck our mizzen mast and we fell fast behind.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Then we cleared our decks for action as she ranged up alongside<br \/>\n<\/em><em>An\u2019 soon upon our quarter-deck there flowed a crimson tide.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We fought till Captain Moore was dead an\u2019 seventy of his men.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Then a round shot set our ship on fire, we were forced to surrender then;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Then we were taken prisoner and into prison cast,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Were tried and found guilty, we were to be hung at last.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>So farewell, farewell, sweet Waterford and the girl I love so dear.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Her voice like music, low and sweet I never more shall hear<br \/>\n<\/em><em>No
