Notwithstanding it\u2019s being so well-known ashore,\u201d (quoted in Christopher Stone\u2019s <em>Sea Songs and Ballads,<\/em> 1906).\u00a0 He didn\u2019t bargain for the relish with Whalsay men might seize on any song connected with a sailor\u2019s life.\u00a0 The words were composed around 1729 by the London poet and playwright John Gay (1685-1732) and were promptly set to music by Richard Leveridge, a leading singer on the London stage.\u00a0 They were printed in the same year by John Watts in <em>The Musical Miscellany<\/em>.\u00a0 Willie\u2019s\u00a0 tune is remarkably close to that printed by Watts as are many versions collected not only in England but also as far afield as Nova Scotia and the southern USA. \u2013 a testament to its popularity both orally and in print despite Admiral Bridge\u2019s comment.\u00a0 Roud lists 133 sources in his folksong and ballad <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vwml.org\/search\/search-roud-indexes?ts=1459335420386&amp;collectionfilter=RoudFS;RoudBS&amp;qtext=Black%20Eyes%20susan#\">index<\/a>.\u00a0 Willie breaks off after verse three but you can hear a longer version rendered by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/10\/black-eyed-susan\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> John Hughson<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>All in the downs the fleet lay moored<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Their streamers waving\u00a0in the wind,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When black-eyed Susan came on board <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Saying, \u201cWhere shall I my true love find?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Tell me oh jovial sailors, tell me true<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Does my sweet William, Does my sweet William <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Dwell amongst your crew?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>William who high upon the yard<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Rock\u2019d by the billows to and fro;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Soon as that well-known voice he heard<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He sighed and cast his eye below;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The cord slides swiftly thro\u2019 his glowing hands<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And quick as lightning, and quick as lightning <\/em><br \/>\n<em>On the deck he stands.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Oh Susan, Susan, lovely dear<\/em><br \/>\n<em>My vows shall ever true remain:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Let me kiss off that falling tear<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We only part to meet again.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Change aye you list, you winds, my heart shall be<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The faithful compass, the faithful compass <\/em><br \/>\n<em>That still points to thee.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>\u201cI\u2019m not sure o\u2019 the words\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/15\/black-eyed-susan-the\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12,34],"tags":[119,124,143],"class_list":["post-548","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-william-hutchison","category-a-h","tag-music-hall","tag-parted-lovers","tag-sea-song"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
