Her friend Betty Poleson helped Jeannie with some prompting.<\/p>\n<p>Jeannie&#8217;s tune was known as <i>Hieland Donald <\/i>in Aberdeenshire, \u00a0and over a century ago the collector Gavin Greig remarked in <i>The Buchan Observer<\/i> (no. 143), \u201cThe refrain <i>Heilan\u2019 Donald<\/i> is old and familiar, and often heard lilted as a detached snatch of presumably some forgotten song\u201d.\u00a0 Greig then quoted nine verses of a poem that Bell Robertson had composed to fit the old tune, using the refrain \u00a0&#8220;Hielan\u2019 Donald kissed Katie, Oh but he kissed her fine; Hieland Donal\u2019 kissed Katie, Doon among the camowine [camomile]&#8221;.\u00a0 The tune for both is known to many Scots as <i>Wha wadna fecht for Charlie. \u00a0\u00a0 <\/i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">(Roud index no. 6317)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is Jeannie\u2019s version, fragmented as it is, but possibly older than many others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I cam in wi Baabie Murray,\u00a0 she wis sitten at da fire<br \/>\n<\/em><em>I cam in that n\u2019a hurry, set the woman in an ire.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Rise Baabie, haste dee Baabie, rise an come with me noo<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The bosun\u2019s lady is sitten greetin, the fairies has shot her only coo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>PC \u201cWhat was the spring to the same tune?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BP \u201cThat wis no a spring, that wis \u2026Red Robbie, kissed Katie\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>JH \u00a0 \u00a0 Red Robbie kissed Katie, Red Robbie kissed her fine;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Red Robbie kissed Katie, in the byre among the kine.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Ever saw you Lunna\u00a0lasses coortin wi da\u00a0Herra men?<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Ever saw you\u00a0copper kettles mended wi\u00a0a bress pin? \u00a0 [brass]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>PC \u201cSing it again, only a bit slower..<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8230;\u00a0Robbie kissed Katie, Red Robbie kissed her fine;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Red Robbie kissed Katie, in the byre among the kine.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Ever saw you copper kettles mended wi a bress pin?<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Ever saw you Lunna lasses coortin wi da Herra\u00a0men?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">These last two lines are intriguing for it is possible that they were known to the\u00a0 poet Sinclair Irvine, composer of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/11\/wreck-of-the-pacific-the\/\">The Wreck of the Pacific<\/a><\/em><\/span>. \u00a0 A letter in the Shetland Archives (Ref. D.9\/113b\/19)\u00a0 mentions, &#8220;A possible rhyme of his is one verse I partially remember and shall give: &#8212; \u201cWha ere\u2019 heard of\u2019 iron kettles, mended wi\u2019 a copper can, Wha ere\u2019 heard o\u2019 Herra lasses, courtin\u2019 wi\u2019 a Skerry man\u201d.
