Andrew was born in 1901 but still had an excellent strong voice when I met him first in 1971 and he was respected as a very fine traditional fiddle player and a stalwart of the church choir. Sea sickness prevented him from going to sea and for a time he managed a shop at Brough in Whalsay and at another time was a builder’s labourer working around Shetland and Orkney. Nevertheless this did not stop him learning a number of fine songs connected with the sea.
