Gilbert Hutchison (Gibbie a’ Creads), – a fisherman for much of his working life – was best known as an excellent fiddle player and was a nephew of Magnus Hutchison, one of the finest of the Whalsay fiddlers of the last century. He learned much of his repertory and style from Magnus. Gibbie was still playing his fiddle at the age of 80 when a CD album of his playing accompanied by his son John on guitar was published in Shetland (Burns Records BR00100).
He had a fine strong singing voice and was recorded singing parts of a couple of songs for us, leading off in the song known as The Sailors’ Alphabet, as well as joining in for a tantalising fragment of the song in praise of Grace Darling at the Cooks’ House late one night..
