{"id":336,"date":"2014-12-10T15:35:17","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T15:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.petercookie.com\/?p=336"},"modified":"2016-03-30T11:10:55","modified_gmt":"2016-03-30T11:10:55","slug":"black-eyed-susan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/10\/black-eyed-susan\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Eyed Susan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mp3jWrap_0\" class=\"mjp-s-wrapper s-graphic unsel-mjp  sdl_right\" style=\"font-size:18px;\"><span id=\"playpause_wrap_mp3j_0\" class=\"wrap_inline_mp3j\" style=\"font-weight:700;\"><span class=\"gfxbutton_mp3j play-mjp\" id=\"playpause_mp3j_0\" style=\"font-size:18px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"group_wrap\"><span class=\"bars_mp3j\"><span class=\"loadB_mp3j\" id=\"load_mp3j_0\"><\/span><span class=\"posbarB_mp3j\" id=\"posbar_mp3j_0\"><\/span><\/span><span class=\"T_mp3j\" id=\"T_mp3j_0\" style=\"font-size:18px;\">72.99.9<\/span><span class=\"indi_mp3j\" style=\"font-size:12.6px;\" id=\"statusMI_0\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><span class=\"s-nosolution\" id=\"mp3j_nosolution_0\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><script>\nMP3jPLAYLISTS.inline_0 = [\n\t{ name: \"72.99.9\", formats: [\"mp3\"], mp3: \"aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zc3NhLmxsYy5lZC5hYy51ay93aGFsc2F5YW5zL3dwLWNvbnRlbnQvdXBsb2Fkcy9zaXRlcy8yLzIwMTUvMDEvNzIuOTkuOS5tcDM=\", counterpart:\"\", artist: \"\", image: \"\", imgurl: \"\" }\n];\n<\/script>\n\n<script>MP3jPLAYERS[0] = { list: MP3jPLAYLISTS.inline_0, tr:0, type:'single', lstate:'', loop:false, play_txt:'&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;', pause_txt:'&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;', pp_title:'', autoplay:false, download:true, vol:100, height:'' };<\/script>\n<p><strong>John Hughson \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em> SA1972.99.9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This rather literary poem was composed by the London poet and playwright John Gay (1685-1732), and Richard Leveridge,\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">a leading singer on the London stage,<\/span>\u00a0fitted them to\u00a0 a tune.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">They were printed in the same year by John Watts in\u00a0<i>The Musical Miscellany<\/i>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge remarked, \u201cI never heard this song sung by sailors, or even alluded to by them, notwithstanding it\u2019s being so well-known ashore,\u201d (quoted in Christopher Stone\u2019s <i>Sea Songs and Ballads <\/i>1906).<i>\u00a0<\/i> He didn\u2019t bargain for the relish with Whalsay men might seize on any song connected with a sailor\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Johnny\u00a0told me that he got the words from a book and the tune from other Whalsay men. \u00a0The tune is remarkably close to that printed by Watts as are many versions collected not only in England but also as far afield as Nova Scotia and the southern USA \u2013 a testament to its popularity both orally and in print, despite Admiral Bridge\u2019s comment.\u00a0 See Steve Roud&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vwml.org\/search\/search-roud-indexes?ts=1459335420386&amp;collectionfilter=RoudFS;RoudBS&amp;qtext=Black%20Eyes%20susan#\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Index<\/span> <\/a>no. 560 where he lists\u00a0 lists over 133 sources.<\/p>\n<p>The original poem contains three other verses less crucial to the simple narrative but John\u2019s words are nearly identical to the printed version \u2013 perhaps a result of it being sold by the\u00a0 Edinburgh printer Sanderson whose penny song-sheets were popular in Whalsay as late as the 1940s. Not surprisingly other Whalsay contributors recorded fragments of this song (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/15\/black-eyed-susan-the\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">William Hutchison<\/span><\/a> of Creadieknowe), though John\u2019s is the longest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>All in the downs the fleet lay moored<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Their banners leaping in the wind<br \/>\n<\/em><em>When dark-eyed Susan came on board<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u201cOh where shall I my true love find<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Tell me you joyous sailors tell me true<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Does my sweet Willie, Does my sweet Willie<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Sail among your crew?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Oh Willie who high upon the yard<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Rock\u2019d by the billows to and fro<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Soon as that well-known voice he heard<br \/>\n<\/em><em>He sighed and cast his eyes below<br \/>\n<\/em><em>The cord glides swiftly thro\u2019 his glowing hand<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And quick as lightning, and quick as lightning<br \/>\n<\/em><em>On the deck he stands<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8220;Oh Susan, Susan lovely dear<br \/>\n<\/em><em>My vows shall ever true remain:<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Let me kiss off that falling tear<br \/>\n<\/em><em>We only part to meet again.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Change as you list, you stars; my heart shall be<br \/>\n<\/em><em>That faithful compass, that faithful compass<br \/>\n<\/em><em>That still points to thee.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8220;If to fair Indian shores we sail<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Thy eyes are seen like diamonds bright like \u00a0 bright<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Thy breath is Afric\u2019s spicy gales<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Thy skin like ivory so white,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Thus every beauteous object that I view,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Wakes in my so-ul, wakes in my so-ul<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Some charm of lovely Sue.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The boatswain gives that dreadful word<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Their sails their swelling bosom spread<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Since she can no longer stay on board<br \/>\n<\/em><em>They kiss\u2019d, she sigh\u2019d, he hung his head<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Her less\u2019ning boat unwilling rows to land;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>&#8220;Adieu,&#8221; she cried, &#8220;Adieu,&#8221; she cried,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And waves her lily-white hand.<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sssa.llc.ed.ac.uk\/whalsay\/2014\/12\/10\/black-eyed-susan\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,34],"tags":[110,124,143],"class_list":["post-336","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-john-hughson","category-a-h","tag-london-theatre","tag-parted-lovers","tag-sea-song"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
